Evaluating Chris Bell is the ultimate head-versus-heart exercise. He's a genuinely thrilling player to watch but history is littered with receivers who tested through the roof and couldn't translate to the NFL due to poor route running. Unfortunately, Bell is more likely to be the rule than the exception. Compounding the concern, Bell will enter his rookie season still recovering from a torn ACL, which will likely limit his availability and development in year one.
One thing working in Bell's favor relative to comparable prospects is his age. He's young enough that the underwhelming efficiency and inconsistent play last season carry less weight than they would for an older prospect. There's still time for his receiver skillset to catch up to his athleticism. Bell is one of the riskier bets in this class, and his ADP is hard to predict. However, the upside may be too significant to let the aforementioned concerns keep me away entirely because Bell has the ability to be extremely special.
Film Notes
- George Pickens-level psychopath, or at least in the same zip code
- Plays with nastiness as a blocker and is a contact seeker
- Route running is essentially nonexistent at this stage, he gets open through size, athleticism, and some of the least subtle push-offs you'll see
- Releases are slow and cluttered with false steps, which will need refinement at the next level
- Devastating after the catch, ruins angles due to his size and speed combination
